If you haven’t followed everything from the start, in 2016 I went alone for a month to visit my parents’ country from north to south and I have written the beginning of my adventures in the following articles:
Now I take you to the center of the country, to Hue, Hoi An, and My Son 🙂
Hue
“A not very positive opinion”
Honestly, I didn’t like Hue very much, which is one hour by plane from Hanoi. This city seemed too sad to me, I didn’t see any lovely places and it was even worse with the bad weather 🙁 Also, I took a boat ride on the Perfume River which disappointed me. The water was not crystal clear but dirty green. The landscape was not dreamy at all. All of this, added to the visit of 3 mausoleums in a row, those of the emperors Minh Mang, Khai Dinh (even if I preferred the decoration of this one), and Tu Duc, which didn’t particularly enchant me, that gives a not very positive opinion … except concerning the food because I ate very good dishes there!
“maybe I could have enjoyed Hue more if…”
I think maybe I could have enjoyed Hue more if firstly the weather had been nicer and secondly if my travel agency had planned for me something else than visiting 3 mausoleums in a row (not very happy, right ? ^^”) while there are plenty of other things to visit there, pagodas, palaces, etc. If one day I go back to Hue, I would like for example to go to Hồ Thuỷ Tiên, an abandoned water park, in the national park of Bãch Mã or to see a show about traditional outfits (“Ao Dai Show”).
This is why, despite my personal feelings about my day of sightseeing, I still advise you to visit this ancient imperial capital of Vietnam (from 1802 to 1945) and capital of the Nguyễn dynasty in the 16th century because it is undoubtedly very culturally rich, there are many interesting things to visit.
My Son
“the place with the most tourists”
I liked My Son Holy Land, the much-visited ruins of the shrine of the Cham people, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was very beautiful, it reminded me of Angkor Wat in Cambodia. The site is very large, the flora is impressive, I felt I was in Jurassic Park. The negative point is that there were a lot of tourists, it is also the place with the most tourists among all those I visited.
Hoi An
“I had a crush”
Despite the incessant rain, I fell in love with Hoi An, which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This city is so cute, colorful, and full of charm. The people are nice, the traders don’t harass us to buy their products, the atmosphere is peaceful. There, you will be able to see its very famous 400-year-old Japanese bridge, the common house of the Chinese congregation of Canton (Hội Quán Quệng Triệu) or its unmissable colorful market.
