Hello my dreamers!
I hope you’re doing well! In this fifth article about Mexico, I will tell you about Akumal, known for its beaches frequented by turtles!
If you want to read or reread the beginning of my adventures in Mexico in 2018, here are my previous articles:
The most famous place to swim with turtles is called Akumal, located about 1h30 south of Cancún by car. When we arrived there, we were offered to rent snorkeling equipment, a life jacket, to pay for a guide… but all that was useless. We declined so we were told we couldn’t park in that area. We had to park further on the coast, where there were no turtles. We replied “No problem”, then they let us park further. Although I assume they weren’t going to follow us and check where we were going to park. And in fact, we had no choice but to do what we were told to do because the parking lots closest to the turtles were full. When we parked, we bought a mask and snorkel in a store. Mine was the cheapest and it cost 370 pesos (about 16€).
Before snorkeling, we went to La cueva del Pescador restaurant. My sister liked her grilled and crispy garlic prawns, while I was a little unsatisfied with the very small portion of rice that came with my fish, which was good though. There were musicians playing in a group, it was nice.
After lunch, we walked across the beach until we found people snorkeling with life jackets. Although there were a lot of people on the beach, no one stole our belongings on our beach towels when we went snorkeling for a few hours. There were mostly tourists, couples, families, and a few groups of young people.
The turtles were much more accessible than I had imagined. They weren’t swimming that far from the beach and we could see three of them. They were so cute and didn’t seem bothered by our presence. We could even HEAR them crunching plants at the bottom of the water lol. Sometimes, we could see them even better when they rose a few seconds to the surface of the water. We also saw fish including an eagle ray. It was also good because there were not too many people looking for the turtles so we could approach them and observe them closely.
On this day swimming with turtles was great! It will remain a great memory!
A quick reminder, my experience was in 2018 on Akumal beach, and I think we were lucky. I recommend you to search for more information before going there because new regulations may have been put in place since, to limit access to this protected area.
